SETTING THE RECORD STRAIGHT about the Tragic Accident at the MDR California 200 Off Road Race

To all of the national and international visitors - by now you have all heard the tragic news and seen the shocking video. However the media reports are full of WRONG info:

Here are the facts. On the night of Aug 14, 2010 at the MDR California 200 Off Road Race held in Lucerne Valley CA, a 1450 class race truck crashed and rolled into a crowd of spectators standing next to the race course in an area known as the Rock Pile. This tragic accident resulted in 8 fatalities and at least 12 serious injuries. Lucerne Valley is located in the Mojave Desert about 120 miles from Los Angeles. The Rock Pile is a rough and technical portion of the race course bordered on both sides by large rock formations. From reputable reports a suspension component may have failed, the truck swapped ends and rolled into the crowd. The driver did NOT just lose control or plow in to the crowd intentionally as reported. The driver was taken away in severe shock. He was NOT chased away by an angry rock throwing mob.

This was a LEGAL, Sanctioned, and premitted race with strict rules and regulations. It was not an illegal street race by a bunch of truck driving hill billys. The driver was not arrested, nor was alcohol involved. CHP is leading the investigation.

To all you media types and internet jockys - This was a TRAGIC ACCIDENT! please be sure to get your facts straight before reporting - AP is not a trustable source. To the rest of you bloggers - think about this before you comment - would you want read some of the vile hateful crap that is being posted if this were your son / daughter / brother /sister / mom /dad /husband /wife involved? This was a tragic ACCIDENT - show a little respect.

Blue Coyote Racing is an off road race team with over a decade of desert race experiance in the US and Baja. We have raced this race (it was our first one in 2002) and know the area very well. We ran this very section only 2 weeks prior - it is a very rough and technical section. Having the expertise of racing and knowledge of the area, we can say this was nothing more than a Tragic ACCIDENT. Our condolonces go out to the families of all those effected by this tragic accident.
